Psalms 14:1 says “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none that doeth good.” (KJV)

The Bible also has a few other notable things to say about a fool.  Romans 1:22 says that “Professing to be wise, they become fools, ...”. (KJV) Proverbs 18:2 says that “Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions”. (NIV)

The fool’s denial of God comes at the expense of his own conscience and the evidence of God’s creation in all corners of the universe in which the fool exists.  As Proverbs rightly points out, there is no effort at all given to a reasonable spiritual understanding, but much effort given to forming innumerable foolish opinions.

Many Bible scholars believe Psalm 14 was written after a period of exile for the nation of Israel. That circumstance alone makes the heart of the fool even more difficult to understand.  A merciful God had returned the nation from exile and brought them home, but there were obviously enough people in the nation who fit the category of fool for God to have the psalmist write about it.

But, the larger question we must deal with is, who are these people today?  What is their problem; or, more specifically, what is their agenda? Atheists are the obvious answer that we all can point to as to who does not believe there is a God.  The run of the mill atheists have been the ones who contend they do not believe in God and just want all of us who believe to leave them alone.  Unquestionably, however, there were and are the aggressive atheists who have filed lawsuits at every level of public life to get God out of every and any government institution.  But, that has not been enough.

We now have the cadre of those who fall into what is known as The New Atheists.  The charge is being led by Dr. Richard Dawkins who has been named several times in this newsletter regarding his misadventures in and his faulty reasoning of evolutionary biology.  In 2006 he published his book, The God Delusion, in which he maintains that with all of the scientific advances known to modern man a belief in any God is totally unnecessary and irrational.

Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion. What takes it to another level from “old” atheism is the vitriol and utter disdain he shows toward anyone who believes in any type of god or religion. Just one example of his obvious contempt is found on page 308 of The God Delusion.

“Do we know of any …. examples where stupid ideas have been known to spread like an epidemic?  Yes, by God!  Religion.  Religious ideas are irrational.  Religious ideas are dumb and dumber: super dumb.”

David Horowitz, himself an agnostic, is a conservative whose mission in life is to defend free societies, has recently published a book entitled Dark Agenda.  After hearing Mr. Horowitz on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight I bought his book.  Make no mistake, as an agnostic, he is no fan of Creation Science, but he defends the right for a Christian to believe it and he defends the right for a Christian to believe in the theology of Christianity.  He decries the contempt and vitriol of The New Atheists and offers this analysis as to why they are so vehement.

“It’s because they have a faith of their own.  They see themselves as liberators - pioneers of a new millennium for the human race.  They envision a future in which religion has been vanquished and rationality prevails. …….. They believe in a vision of a world of “new men and women”, liberated from the chains of the past.  Science will usher in a utopian age of reason, enlightenment and social justice.

This is the vision of an earthly redemption.  It’s a fantasy in which human beings aspire to act as gods and create new worlds.”

Sound familiar?  Of course it does.  How many Biblical references are there to men who sought to disavow God and raise themselves to the posture of a god?  Sounds like a fool to me. Did the western world not go through The Age of Reason in the 18th century where everything was characterized by a critical approach to religious, social, and philosophical matters that sought to repudiate beliefs or systems not based on or justifiable by human reason.  And how did that work out?

God survived all attempts to reason Him out of existence and is still here plaguing the steps of the old atheists, The New Atheists and all others of their ilk.

However, in my opinion, sometimes it is the more subtle, deceitful person who does not define himself out loud, but hides his denial while pretending to be something he is not, who is most troubling. An atheist will usually get right in your face and tell you that he does not believe in any God, much less a God of creation. It’s the subtle, deceitful fool that hides behind a veneer of Christianity who believes he is really too intelligent, evolved and elite to have need of God. If he can get God out of the way, the deceiver knows just what to do to rule this world.

Remember some of these statements?

Barack Obama famously or infamously, if you will, described many Christians as bitter, “clinging to their guns or their religion.” This was a great put down of people who were in small towns, out of step, not sophisticated or cosmopolitan enough in Obama’s estimation to understand his “new” approach to government. In other words, all those people needed to wise up and understand where the world was going because he was going to lead us to it. And he did his best for eight long years.

All of this was done and said while President Obama proclaimed on more than one occasion that he was a Christian and that Christ was his Savior. Obviously, he did not cling to that thought. Yet, he was elected while saying that he was going to fundamentally change America – an America based on Christian beliefs and individual freedoms given by God. A good many of us failed to listen.

And following in Obama’s footsteps, Hilary Clinton served up yet another put down in her remarks to an LGBT for Hillary gala. In her remarks she stated: “You know, just to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters in a basket of deplorables.  Right?  …………………. Now, some of those folks - they are irredeemable…”

The deplorables and irredeemables. Who were the majority of people who supported Trump to whom Hillary could have been referring as racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophobic?  Who else but the Christian and evangelical community at large?  It is more than ironic that the description of irredeem-able was used to define those who believe they have been redeemed. But, Candidate Hillary Clinton saw herself as occupying an elitist position far above them or their God. She was definitely too good for God or His freely offered redemption.  All of those people who believe in a personal Creator God were in her way.  She had better causes to support and a far less high Christian wall of faith to climb to get there. Or, so she thought. Again, Hillary was baptized in the Methodist denomination and continues there. She has said on many occasions that her faith has shaped her politics, even when she disagrees with the church. I’m also of the opinion that Hillary does not consider herself as irredeemable and, most likely, does not find herself in need of redemption.

What is the common thread that runs through all of these categories of people who denounce God and raise up another standard that they believe to be better? They want another god who thinks and acts just like them. They desperately want to be gods. They are no longer content to worship the Living Creator God; they want to be worshipped for the supposed supremacy of who they believe themselves to be. They want to offer their own brand of earthly redemption and create new worlds based solely on reason without God. None of that heavenly stuff for them. They without doubt consider themselves too good for God. God calls them fools and will deal with them when He knocks them off the thrones erected in their own minds.

But, for those of us who live with such people in the here and now, there is a caution. These are vile and corrupt persons who are seeking to do Christians and other faiths harm. We need to be wise and take up the battle in the many forms in which it comes. This Nation has already elected one such god pretender to be president of the United States. The Church cannot afford to go to sleep and allow a similar thing to happen again. Christians and conservatives also allowed a long run of Supreme Court decisions, bad decisions not based on the Constitution, to turn 200 years of Constitutional Christian and civil precedent into victory for these gods of reason when the majority of those then-sitting on the Supreme Court decided to exercise their god-like identities and impose the dictates of their rule on this Nation.

Let those of you in other nations also beware. Those who would be gods are at battle with us. Are we battling back? A united voice praying for revival in the world is not only an obligation; it is necessary. The battle begins in the heavens just as the Apostle Paul taught. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

And when the spiritual wickedness manifests itself in the culture in which we live we are to fight with every other tool the Church and citizens of the nations have been given.  The Church universal is not powerless. We need to grasp that fact and get on with the battle.  Walls built by fools can come down just like the walls of Jericho when God decrees it.
